Sin is more than what you might think!
#1: Sin is Transgression Against the Law of God: First, sin is what we do in disobedience of God’s laws. Yes, perhaps we could, if we tried hard enough, stop doing many things that the Bible says we ought not be doing.
#2: Sin is a state of being: And sin is the vitiated state of human nature in which the self is estranged from God. The conscious decision to begin today never to sin again in your whole life- and succeeded as if that were possible-, the fact that you had sinned at all (transgressed God’s Law) means that your state of being as a sinner is unchanged. No one is good…(all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23). There is nothing that we ourselves can do to change our sinful state of being.
#3: Sin goes beyond one’s deeds and actions: Iniquity in the Hebrew is “`avon” and means “to bend, twist, distort” so iniquities are a bending, twisting, or distorting of the law or God’s Word to different degrees worthy of punishment. Iniquity is a violation of the right or duty that mankind is under obligation to do, and as such, an iniquity can also be a wicked act, immoral conduct, or practices that are harmful or offensive to society but especially to God. It is imperative to remember: GOD HAS DEMANDED A PENALTY BE PAID FOR SIN!
But…there’s Good News! God has provided the Way that resolves our state of being as a sinner, and where sinners receive the power, strength, and determination to avoid sin. The “Way” that God has made gives a new reason and motivation and power to resist temptation and have victory over sin. The “Way” has a name, a name like no other having the power to save. His name is Jesus Christ who is the way, the truth and the life; no man comes unto the Father but by Him. (John 14:6).
Now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed- not by”being good enough” and trying to keep His laws, but by a new way (though not new, really, for the Scriptures told about it long ago). Now God says He will accept and acquit us- declare us “not guilty”- if we trust Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this way, by turning to Christ, no matter who we are or what we have been like…For God sent Jesus Christ to take the punishment for our sins. (Romans 3:21-25 paraphrased)
